In Year 6, we encourage children to take greater responsibility for their learning and to develop positive learning habits at home. Children are expected to read their book-band colour book at least three times each week to support fluency and comprehension. Mathletics homework is set weekly to reinforce key mathematical skills taught in class, and topic-linked project tasks are set once every half-term to encourage creativity, independence and deeper learning across the curriculum. If you have any questions or would like additional material, please speak to one of the Year 6 team.
Knowing Times Tables is a key skill for several reasons, as they serve as the building blocks for more advanced mathematical concepts and everyday life skills. In Year 6, the children need to know up to 12 x 12 including the division facts.
TTRS, hit the button and MTC Check are useful tools to help you learn these quickly!
Reading regularly is a vital skill that supports children’s learning across the whole curriculum, helping to develop their vocabulary, comprehension and imagination. It also builds confidence and fosters a lifelong love of books.
In Year 6, children should be reading at least 5 times per week, and a range of texts is encouraged, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, magazines and even online through SORA. Regular reading at home makes a significant difference to progress and helps children become fluent, confident readers.
Mathletics is a valuable online tool that allows children to practise and apply the maths skills they have been learning in school. Regular use helps to build confidence, reinforce understanding and improve fluency in key areas of mathematics. Activities are matched to current learning, providing extra support and challenge where needed.
If you would prefer a printed version of the activities, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Topic hook posters are designed to introduce new topics in a fun and engaging way, helping to spark curiosity and excitement before the unit begins. These activities give children the opportunity to explore ideas, share what they already know and begin thinking about their new learning. Completing the topic hook helps children feel prepared, confident and ready to fully engage with the exciting learning ahead.
