Welcome to our new website page!

This half-term, Year 4 have been transported back in time as we completed our history-led topic on the Romans. We began by exploring who the Romans were and how their powerful empire spread across vast parts of the world. The children took on the role of historians, carefully examining evidence and asking thoughtful questions to deepen their understanding of Roman life. They were particularly fascinated by the culture of the Roman army, learning about the equipment soldiers carried, the impressive weaponry they used and the clever battle formations that helped them succeed.

Our English learning was closely linked to our history topic. The children used their research to inspire some fantastic writing, producing detailed pieces filled with rich facts and historical vocabulary. They worked hard to present their findings clearly, just like real historians, and it was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they shared their knowledge through their writing.

In Design and Technology, the children experienced a taste of Roman life by making their own Roman-style bread. They carefully followed instructions and learned about the ingredients and methods the Romans would have used, enjoying the opportunity to bring history to life through food. We also designed and created our own Roman shields, thinking carefully about patterns, symbols and how shields were used for protection in battle.

To finish our topic, the children proudly became part of our very own “Merton Legion.” Holding their shields, they marched together just like Roman soldiers, experiencing first-hand the teamwork and discipline that made the Roman army so effective. This immersive experience helped the children truly understand what life might have been like for a Roman soldier.

This half-term has been filled with curiosity, creativity and excitement. The children have developed their historical enquiry skills, strengthened their writing and enjoyed hands-on experiences that made their learning memorable. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and can’t wait to see what fascinating discoveries await us next!
